چکیده

As part of the determination of the ecological Reserve for rivers in South Africa (National Water Act, 1998), flow requirements are assessed for maintenance low flow, drought low flow and flood conditions. Since water quantity and water quality are often closely linked, it is necessary to ensure that in setting the recommended flow regime, the appropriate water quality will be attained. This paper presents a simple method (based on solute rating curves) for predicting the instream concentrations of chemical constituents that will arise from different flow regimes. The method uses monthly mean flow (discharge) at a given site plotted against monthly median concentration of each chemical constituent. This is carried out for both the reference condition (the natural, or least-impacted state) and for the present state. The flow-concentration relationships obtained are used to predict the expected monthly concentrations under the recommended flow regime. The computed concentrations can be compared with the reference condition and present state values to assess the degree of river modification. This paper outlines the modelling protocol to be followed, considers the limitations and assumptions inherent in the approach, and the application of the resultant information. It is concluded that the modelling method is a useful screening tool for identifying sites where, without reduction of pollution, the water quality component of the Reserve is unlikely to be attained under the recommended flow regime.

Water quality zoning of Vishwamitri River to access environmental flow requirements through aggregation of water quality index

Environmental flow requirements, to maintain the functioning of freshwater-dependent ecosystems and restore rivers in ecologically acceptable conditions, depend upon the present water quality status of the river. Various stretches of Vishwamitri River vary in quality and quantity. Water quality index is a tool to converse information regarding water quality of various stretches of river and can...

Investigating future changes in groundwater quantity and quality in the Khash alluvial aquifer through numerical groundwater flow and solute transport modeling

The Khash alluvial aquifer, in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, supplies the water needed for agriculture, drinking, and industry in the Khash area. In order to predict the future status of groundwater level and water quality, and to find aquifer management solutions, groundwater flow and solute transport models were developed using MODFLOW and MT3DMS. GMS 10.3 was used to develop the model. Ca...

Determining the best water quality model for the rivers in north of Iran (case study: Pasikhan River)

The aim of this paper is to study the popular models used for the simulation of major elements of a water quality system. The present study compares results of the CE-QUAL-W2 model with the WASP5 and MIKE11 models to assess the water quality of Pasikhan River. The contaminant loadings of Nitrate and Phosphate are utilized in the CE-QUAL-W2, WASP5 and MIKE11 simulations. This study is the first ...
